Banner (of Gork... or possibly Mork) upgrade. This guy was pretty fun. I also magnetized the arm that is carrying the Banner so that I can put him away for storage. It also allows the banner to rotate depending on the needs of Close Assault.

I'm updating for 6th edition after taking a 2 year break following the arrival of my 2nd wee squig (a boy, now I have one of each).

This is the list I'm building towards as my getting into the new edition list. I've not yet actually played 6th so any feedback and helpful tips would be appreciated.

Some pictures are blurry, but luckily I think I was still able to get the jist of everything down in picture form.

Step 1: Materials

Here we begin with 1 AoBR Deffkopta and 1 AoBR Nob. The tires are from Lego (the 30mm x 14mm knobby tire) which you can buy online by itself or from a local Lego store. In my case, I got mine from the Lego store at Stonebriar Mall in Frisco, Texas. I got about 24 of them for just under $9.

Step 2: Tools

Just a snapshot of some of the tools I used to do this project. The blade of a hobby saw (this was vital for my project, cutting straight lines!) for cutting straight lines, sprue cutter, pin vise with #66 drill bit, 1/32 brass rod, superglue, hobby blade, and a file.

Step 3: Cutting out the Ork pilot

Here you see snips I made in the plastic with the sprue cutters. This weakened the model so that I was able to just tear out the pilot by bending him.

I just used the sprue cutters like a pair of pliers and pried out the pilot in chunks. You can see him lying there in the background. Repeat for the other side. Then use a file and the hobby knife to clean up the seat (smooth it down).

Step 4: Cutting off the landing skids

Hobby saw blade coming to the rescue by being so straight. This allowed me to almost perfectly cut along the lines formed by the sculpt.

Step 5: Cutting off the lower rokkits and the caps of the top ones.

Again, you can see the straight line that the saw blade provides as I slice off the area that will be the wheel well of the front wheel. I leave the top pair of missiles to act as the mounting point for Dakkagunz later.

Step 6: Cutting off the tail assembly

Hobby saw blade once again. Basically I followed the mold lines and totally removed the tail rotor, leaving the engines. One of the sets of hoses comes off due to a small box that protrudes. I still haven't glued the two halves together... I just hold them together while I cut so that they're even.

You can also see I've cut off the overhead prop... this is a lot easier to do if the halves are not yet glued together. Note I preserved the "belt" detailing in the plastic... that's because I need that!

Step 7: Making room for the tire chain/belt

Here I slice off a section of engine detailing to file down and make a flat area where I will mount my "chain."

Step 8: Attach rear tire assembly

Here you see a better shot of how much of the prop assembly that got cut off. You also see what happens to the prop "arm"... it becomes the bike chain. One of the landing skids also becomes the "mud guard" for the bike chain. This piece is not decorative, it provides structural strength by giving me a second attachment point for the tire which is glued to the bike chain "arm"... there's also a blob of greenstuff up inside what used to be the "ball socket" prop blade housing that's now on the underside of the bike. That greenstuff also gives me a bit more support.

ps - The tire is not centered using this method. It doesn't bother me because I think it looks cooler this way, but if it'll bother you to not have a centered rear tire... you've been warned. :)

Step 9: Attach front tire assembly

The picture explains it all I should think. One of the propellar blades becomes the two front tire spokes. I filed down the sides of the lego tire until it was smooth and filed down the inside surface of the prop blade so that they'd mesh up. Then I just glued it all to the front cowl. You can see the "hub" from the propellar blade now becomes the reverse "hubcab" of the rear tire.

Step 10: Slice off the nob

Cut off the legs (cut all of the hip/belt area, you can always file down, but it's difficult to add back material). Sorry, blurry.

Step 11: Reattach instruments, minus handlebars

Cut off the handlebars and reattached the dials. Sorry, blurry.

Step 12: Greenstuff the nob

Blob of greenstuff will form the link. There's also a tiny blob in the center of the nobz back as well (so that it attaches to the vertical seat back).

Coming together! I just smoothed down the greenstuff with the flat side of my hobby knife (I just used spit to keep it "slick" so that it wouldn't stick to the green stuff). Note I cut off the front "radiator" and replaced it with an upside down Space Marine backpack... dunno why... thought it would be fun. Next time I leave the original radiator in place. :)

Step 13: Putty in hole left from prop assembly

There's a hole left up top where you cut off the rotor assembly. Here I used a spot of greenstuff and the front of the other landing skid to fill it in. You can also see small pilot holes I drilled into the exhaust pipes for when I drill them out later.

Step 14: Remove the handlebars and brakes from the molded hands of the pilot

Much, much careful sawing with the hobby blade and filing.

Step 15: Attach handlebars and Dakkagun barrels

1/8th styrene tube for the win! Due to overexposure of the flash, you can't really see the detail of the Dakkaguns. However, I drew a crude drawing showing how to do the styrene and drill the holes. As you can see, I used greenstuff to attach the barrels.

Step 16: Attach step ... done

At the very bottom you can see I cut the tips off the other pair of prop blades to form a small "step up" as well as rippy side bits. I took this photo on top of two 40mm discs to show how it'll look on a bike base.

With that... I'm done. 4 hours of work.

If you liked this tutorial please let your Ork friends know about it or leave a comment! :)

As a bonus, here are some other ones (found elsewhere on this blog).
#1 - My prototype/proof of concept#3 Nob

UPDATE (9/13/2010): You can order Lego parts online here: Lego Pick a Brick online store. However, for those who are savvy with conversion work, here it is unprimered so you can see where everything came from.

The only things that didn't come from the Assault on Black Reach set are the tires and the green stuff (plus 1 tiny piece of styrene rod to rebuild the handlebar). The tires are from my local Lego store (though you can get them online). It's the 30mm x 14mm knobby one.

Believe it or not, it fits on a bike base (barely). The centerpoint of the tires just rests on the edges of the base. When I figure out how I want to do the guns, they'll go into those pinholes up front.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07381584224829945533noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2474268219508159621.post-36242376459267502062010-06-17T02:02:00.000-05:002010-06-17T02:11:11.742-05:00Waaaghin' SS Test ModelI spent like four hours mixing different swatches of paint but only did a 2 hour "quickie" figure. The "front view" is blurry except for the base, but it isn't the purpose of the picture anyway. The backside is really the image I was wanting.

There seems to be some heavy pixelation that hopefully I'll have fixed when I take my "real" pics. However, for test images I think they'll do.

Dunno if you can tell or not, but that "Feldgrau" actually does have a slight greenish tint to it. The ork skin is also more "yellow" than my blueish tinted regular "Ooliganz" paint job (Reaper MSP Pale Green is yellow tinted, Jade Green is blue tinted). I like it because since I use Muddy Olive in both the skin mixture and the uniform mixture, I think it really unifies the look.

The awesome base if from Dragon Forge Design's Urban Rubble Wasteland product line.

This one was all done with a brush over white Tamiya spray primer. One lone Deffkopta held on until the end of turn 6 to deny the outright victory due to obliterating one's opponent. In other words "counts as a win" by scenario design, but I would say it's only an Ork Moral Victory at best.

I learned a lot and am slowly building up the momentum to just finish my Lootas that I've been waffling on.

The game was a lot of fun, the other highlight of the night was discovering a great Thai restaurant next door to the place where we were playing!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07381584224829945533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2474268219508159621.post-35726138215316982282010-03-01T10:33:00.000-06:002010-03-01T10:43:04.077-06:00(Review) GW Trukk Kit how I love you......let me count the ways. :)

So, if anyone's taken the time to glance over my Ork blog it's fairly clear that like most Ork players... I like to Kustomize. I scratch built my Battle Wagons because I considered the official one too "weedy" and "grotlike" for my tastes (it's physical "presence" on the battlefield just wasn't up to snuff for this Warboss for the "carry 20 Boyz into battle" configuration... an inch or so of scaling in height and width prior to sending it to the printers would have made it just about perfect).

So, because I was so upset with the GW Battlewagon, I didn't give the regular "Trukk" kit a second thought. I figured if GW could screw up something so central to an Ork Waaagh as the Battle Wagon, the Trukk would have no hope. For the escalation league, I bought a Trukk kit. I figured... why not?

Pictures of my project here:
http://waaaghhound.blogspot.com/2010/02/painting-rust-on-trukk-and-skorcha.html
(only options used are Red Paint Job and Reinforced Ram)

Well... I've repented my prior opinion and just had to sing the praises.

1) The 6 Tires (or perhaps Tyres) are wonderful. So many tiny details are in each one that if GW would spin this out into its own sprue I'm certain they'd have Orky Mek buyers at (nearly) any price.
2) The basic vehicle frame, details and modeling of the suspension and drive system are amazing. It looks both Orkish and suits the well known Armor 10 rickety-ness of the Trukk at the same time. Minor details like a semi-truck trailer hitch socket as well as a tow hook/trailer hit hook really add to the look and feel.
3) The detailing on the engine and exhaust is top notch. Air intake, Toof bespeckled radiator, unbalanced cooling fan, nitro canisters, hoses, etc. are all minor details tucked away into this little bit. The fact that it sockets into the drivetrain so nicely shows the effort the original (3D?) artist took in the design.
4) The above go together like a dream. A few spots of glue and you're ready to go.

5) The detailing on everything else is about what I'd expect. It's top notch. The vehicle options included in the kit make it a great source for kustomization bits for down the road (wrecking ball, boarding planks, plates for extra armor, and the reinforced ram). And, like a "proppa" kit, it looks fine if you leave these options off.
6) The crew compartment has a hidden piece of hilarity. The driver's side and the gunner's cupola can be swapped. I guess US Orks drive on one side and UK Orks on the other. ;)
7) The Big Shoota cupola has rails and hooks so that if you don't wish to glue it down you don't have to (and it still sets in nicely). This is a huge bonus for actual play since you can now remove the cupola to represent weapon destroyed results. With careful application of glue, the gunner can even continue to rotate within the cupola ring like a turret.

8) With a Bullet… the biggest and best feature of this kit is… see points 1-4 above. This kit is probably the biggest boon to “kustom” vehicle Mek makers I’ve ever seen. The possibilities for building your own vehicle on top of the “canvas” (kanvas?) provided are nearly limitless.

However, this wouldn't be a 'proppa' review without a list of the stuff I didn't like.

1) The posing of the gunner's arms. It's very, very difficult to get the big shoota and the gunner's pose to come out looking anything like what the picture on the box suggests. If the pose matters to you, expect to have to do some cutting and greenstuff work. If you don't mind the gunner pose being one of the gunner hiding behind his own ammo drum, well then by all means just glue and go. :)
2) While the crew compartment can be swapped US/UK drivers side... only one side actually gives you enough room to glue the dashboard in easily. If the driver is on the left side, expect a tight fit and a few curse words if you don't assemble it in the correct order when you try to match the dashboard up with the “steering wheel” held by the driver.
3) For painting purposes, if a "competitive" (aka scoring) paint job is your goal - don't follow the printed directions. Assemble and paint separately: 1) frame/engine (don’t glue the tires on like the directions suggest), radiator, and right side exhaust (and reinforced ram if desired), 2) tires, 3) driver, dashboard, gunner cupola rails, and crew cabin, 4) gunner cupola (with wrecking ball if desired), 5) left side exhaust, 6) cargo area (with boarding planks if that’s your desire). Finish the 6 major parts, and then do final assembly after they’re all painted. Otherwise you will NOT be able to get a paintbrush everywhere you need it to go.

Anyway, I love this kit. If you're a Mek that loves to "kustomize" and haven't given the GW Trukk a try... I recommend biting the slugga one time and see if it doesn't spark your creative Squig juices in new and interesting ways.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07381584224829945533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2474268219508159621.post-69482375310171658632010-02-28T20:34:00.000-06:002010-02-28T20:41:07.294-06:00Painting "Rust" on a Trukk and Skorcha BuggySo I was experimenting with "rust" painting techniques all weekend. I bought and put together a real GW Trukk instead of scratch building (shocking I know). I also rummaged around my old box of Ork bitz and found a buggy in need of a home. I used one of my several dozen Kinder Surprise Eggs and turned it into a Skorcha buggy (like the "turret?" :) ).

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07381584224829945533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2474268219508159621.post-47942934184416489742010-02-23T13:05:00.001-06:002010-02-23T14:07:02.606-06:00Da Nidz

"Boss Snikrot observed the carnage that spread across the XM Moon. As his Kommandos lashed the captured guns to the Deffkoptas to be looted and taken back to the Meks he smiled to himself. The great thing about krumpin' Tyranids was the loot. "Back home" Tyranid Teef were going for about 2-to-1 for Proppa Ork Teef. Tyranid Big Teef like from Hive tyrants and the like were going for 1-to-1. The loot from this krumpin' expedition would easily afford him and his boys a few new gubbinz at the Mek shops.

Snikrot reached down and yanked a fang loose from the dead Tyranid Warrior he was sitting on. It came free with a satisfying, sticky, and wet cracking sound. He used it to clean out the grizzly bits from between the serrations on the rippy knives that served him so well in so many battles. Yup, Tyranids was good for krumpin' all right. They gave both Teef as well as a right proppa fight... what more could an Ork ask for?"

Last night was my first battle against the new Tyranids... the other player was new, and had purchased the Tyranid Battle Force plus a Hive Tyrant. After upgrades and whatnot it came out to right at 750 points.

Wow. The new 'Nid codex is so full of krunchy goodness it almost makes me want to play them. As it was, it was only the direct application of a liberal dose of Kommandos + Snikrot that allowed me to pull a win from what would have almost certainly been a loss.

Force Org: What we call "Reconnaissance in Force" missions. 750 points. 0-1 HQ, 1+ Troop. No vehicle greater than DV 12. This is a heavily modified "Combat Patrol" mission. We use these as part of a sort of "escalation league" we're doing (500 point combat patrols to start, reconnaissance in force missions after they've had some time to paint up 500 points, then standard missions at 1500+).

Mission: Seize Ground + Dawn of War

Tyranids: Hive Tyrant, Hormagaunts, Termagaunts, Genestealers, Warriors

Orks: Slugga Boys, Trukk Boys, Deffkoptas, Kommandos + Snikrot.

Turn 1 Top - I go first because the 'Nid player won and gave it to me. Slugga Boyz take an objective and Trukk Boys take another. Kommandos and Deffkoptas in reserve. No shooting, no 'Nids on the board.

Turn 1 Bottom - Nids walk on and advance, there's some shooting but Night Fighting rules prevent any hits. Genestealers in reserve.

Turn 2 Top - Deffkoptas show up and Turbo Boost onto the field, heading for the Hive Tyrant. I am just close enough to Waaagh and reach the Hormagaunts (with my Slugga Boys) and the Termagaunts (with my Trukk Boyz). I don't want to BE charged, so I head on in for the party. I do a little shooting with the Trukk's Big Shoota and kill one Termagaunt. The Trukkboyz and their Nob obliterate the Termagants suffering only one death. They consolidate backwards (away from the nearby Hive Tyrant). The Slugga Boyz are able to wipe out the Hormagaunts suffering about 40% casualties in return (I shudder to imagine if I had been the one actually charged!!!). They consolidate forwards towards the Warriors. Kommandos and Snikky are still in Reserve.

Turn 2 Bottom - Genestealers show up. Warriors blow holes in my Slugga Boyz with guns. The Hive Tyrant blows up my Trukk (and the explosion takes several of my Trukk boyz with it who were too close to the explosion). Genestealers pile in and eat my poor Slugga Boyz for dinner and take the objective. Hive Tyrant piles in and finishes off my Trukk boys taking two wounds in the process... oh oh... I have no scoring units left. It now becomes "annihilation" for the Orks to pull out a win.

Turn 3 Top - Kommandos and Snikky show up and move on just behind the Genestealers. The Deffkoptas all open fire on the Hive Tyrant and bring it down (2 wounds plus 2 the Trukk boyz did). My 2 Kommando Burna boys open up with some Squig Oil flavored lovin' on the Genestealers and kill all but 1 ... who is now too far away to assault.

Turn 3 Bottom - Warriors do some shootin' and butcher a few of my Kommandos. Genestealer charges in and slaughters a couple more as it dies. Warriors are just outside of Assault range.

Turn 4 Top - Kommandos advance, Deffkoptas advance. Deffkoptas do a lot of shooting and score a lot of no hits. Kommando Burna boys open up with more Squig Oil scented lovin' and put down one Warrior. Kommandos pile in and finish off another warrior taking several dead in return.

Turn 4 Bottom - Warrior continues the assault killing a few more Kommandos but is dead by an acute case of Snikrot. Orks pull out a win.

Survivors: Snikrot, 6-ish Kommandos, and 3 Deffkoptas.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07381584224829945533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2474268219508159621.post-69869253456682843312010-02-16T19:30:00.000-06:002010-02-16T19:32:16.978-06:00Standinz in da PremI've added a new navigation menu thingy across the top of the blog, and a new page "Standinz" which gives a bit more fluff to my army and the "hooligan" theme that I'm going with. I plan to one day buy and paint the full on Boss Snikrot but I don't have the cash right now. So I decided to convert my own to fit with my Kommandos.

Also, I have been learning lots of "new" painting skills (for me) and I wanted a chance to try them out. So I primed this figure white and did all kinds of stuff. Hopefully it shows.... Well it's not that I've not been painting and it's not because I haven't been blogging.

The problem is... I have AADD ... it's a horrible condition that causes gaping holes in one's bank account and free time. Terrible... terrible...

Well anyway, I maintain one other "real" army (Imperial Fist Space Marines), help out with my wife's army from time to time (Inquisition), and of course, there's always my beloved Imperial Guards.

So in an attempt to draw attention to all my army blogs, I'm going to add a blogroll to each that points to all my others. I recycled the R/C electronics from another hobby of mine. These first pictures show how I hot glued everything to a single square (from which I cut rectangles for the servos).

Then after this phase, I glue on another rectangle of styrene and then glue the battery. The major element that makes them sneaky gitz of course are the leaves. These are the old free jungle trees that came with the 3rd (or was it 4th?) edition box set (the one with Dark Eldar in it). Iron shod boots stomp out the wardrums of a green tide advancing. There is a dull glow behind some ruins as a Big Mek fires up his Force Field. Seeing the shimmering green light, the Ultramarines take up their positions, and try to peer through the fading darkness - hoping to spot the greenskins before they get too close. To the Orkish right, the deep discordant rumble of a ramshackle Trukk breaks the morning silence - within moments it's followed by the unmuffled roar of battlwagons, warbikes, and another Trukk.

Knowing that the Orks are coming, the Marines move into action. The mighty rumble of a Land Raider heralds the arrival of the mechanized wing of the Marines. Speeders roar to the front as the Drop Pods land; unloading their Dreadnought passengers. A few stalwart battle brothers that had taken up positions behind ruins to the left of the Ork advance see them as they come up through the trees. Bolters let fly as battle begins. Orbital attacks rain down upon the Orks, deflected by the Force Fields.

Turn 2 - Orks on the right wing of the green advance rocket towards some Marine scouts and slaughter them in close battle. More Orks on the right attempt to deal with the Dreadnought that landed nearby; the entombed Marine's skill in battle and armor serving it well to resist the Slugga Boyz. The Warbikes roar on to flank the Marines and some of the Marine Speeders are rocked and stunned. On the Orkish left, the green tide advances from between the trees. The Slugga Boyz behind a skirmish line of grots, pushed forward like slaves, lashed by the high pitched staccato harangue of the Grotmissar! Near the second drop pod, Ghazghkull Thraka himself leaps to the boarding plank of his Battle Wagon and slams into the Dreadnought, beating it soundly (though not destroyed) as the Boys in the 'wagon watch on.

With the sun at last over the horizon, the Marines cut loose into the advancing greenskins. The confused mass of jade skin, teeth, and rusted metal causing very few to stand out (and thus fall to bolter fire). Several heavy strikes from the Thunderfire cannons smash into the battle wagons to no effect, as the Big Mek's Force Field holds strong. The scouts, with Warbiker Nobz so near continue to fall back. The Land Raider roars forward and unleashes flaming Prometheum against the Boyz in the center.

Turn 3 - On the Orkish left, the Dreadnought is finished off and the battlewagons move to take the left flank, shielding themselves from the Thunderfire onslaught. The grots advance, herded forward by the Grotmissar and a lucky shot actually lands - wounding the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines... nobody was more shocked than the grot that fired the bullet! The boyz in the center assault the Land Raider, knowing that there was little other option. On the Right of the Orkish advance, carnage rules as Marines and butchered down, speeders are finished off, and Warbikes roll on. Fueled by their taste for blood, during a momentary madness, the Grots charge the Marines! They were; of course, cut down.

The Marines at last start dealing out some retribution! The mighty Thunderfire cannons rain down devastation on two entire mobs of Slugga Boyz on the Orkish right flank. The Marines in the land Raider pile out and assault the Boyz, dealing heavy hurt but the Nob is able to hold on to discipline and the nearly obliterated unit refuses to run (after the Nob popped the head off a fleeing boy with his power klaw to remind the lads who's boss). Two speeders roar up and try to take out the battle wagons attempting to flank the left side. Exploiting a momentary disturbance in the force... field (sorry, couldn't resist), a Multi-Melta shot connects and brings low The Prophet of the Waaagh's red ride.

Turn 4 - The passengers of the battlewagon unload an absurd amount of weapons fire upon the marine speeders. A Nob, leaping on a boarding plank to get the necessary height, destroys one. The boys and Ghazghkull pile out and destroy the other. The Orks on the right completely cave in the Marine line - the Nob Warbikes rolling forward like a belching black smokey incarnation of Mork (or possibly Gork) as many more Marines flee the field. The last Dreadnought also falls.

More weapons fire softens up the Orks a bit more; but, sensing the turning of the tide, the Marines finish off the boyz in the middle of the field and withdraw. Today is not a good day to die for the Emperor, far too many colonists are still in danger from the Ork Waaagh and the Ultramarines cannot afford to martyr themselves yet.

Ork victory, 8 points to 5 points.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07381584224829945533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2474268219508159621.post-67791782909009413082009-06-21T15:52:00.000-05:002010-02-23T20:20:30.668-06:00Grots, grots, grots30 Grots

I've been painting Grots all weekend! I painted 30 of the little buggers.

Here they are, dull coated (interestingly enough, "dull" coat has a bit of a sheen) and mobbed together. The ones in the front are blurry but you get the idea. Back when I was playing Warhammer 3rd edition 10 years ago, I was able to get a great deal on several boxes of Rebel Grots from Gorka-Morka. When I busted open all the packages I discovered I had 30 of them (a full sized mob).

What I did NOT have were RuntHerds (the Grot's Ork "tenders") so I converted them from bitz from the Ork sprues and a leftover Slugga Boy. The bits are the basic should pads glued to each other with a bit of sprue acting as the mounting point (I drill a small hole) to a rod of solder.

Da Grotmissar

The one I spent several hours painting all by itself was "Da Grotmissar" (counts as Runtherd with Grot Prod and serves as the Mob's "Squig Hounds").

Imperial Commissars in the game allow you to shoot your own men and reroll a failed Morale test. Squig Hounds do the same thing (except they eat the Grots I suppose).

I had this awesome miniature called "The Red Gobbo" and wanted to paint him up like a Commissar. To justify my "counts as Runtherd" ... the reason he has a Ballistic Skill of 2 instead of the normal 3 that Grots have is because he wears corrective lenses. The "melta pistol" that The Red Gobbo came with will count as my Grot Prod (wounds on a 4+) and also explains how he vaporizes Grots d3 at a time to inspire his Grot brethren to fight on!

He is the first, greatest, and most famous of Orkperial Grotmissars!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07381584224829945533noreply@blogger.com0
